Concept Truck History:
In 1996 Dodge produced the Indy ram Pace Truck to go
along with the introduction of the 1996 Viper GTS at the
Indy 500. The "Replica" Indy Rams were modeled after the
THREE "Official" full-dress Indy Ram's built as
"Concepts" pre-Indy. These original Rams were built by
MSX (then Masco Tec) in Detroit. They were equipped with
all of the goodies including computer, headers, valve
springs, pulleys, exhaust, low restriction air filter as
well as hard tonneau cover, ground effects, running
boards and front/rear smooth air dams. The duties of
these 3 and very "Rare" trucks were as follows:
Truck #1:
One of THREE identically custom assembled Dodge Ram
1500's by MSX, it was utilized as the Dodge/Mopar Emissions
certification vehicle. The then-head of Dodge/Viper
Marketing, Ron Smith, was assigned this truck in
conjunction with being the "Official Pace Car" and VCA
coordinator at Indy for Dodge.
Truck #2:
Indy Ram was loaned to Indy 500 President, Tony George,
for 60 days. He and his staff used it extensively during
race month.
Truck #3:
This exact truck; was the "Magazine-Public Relations
Pool Truck" that "Hot Rod Magazine" and others initially
used for media testing. This was the "Public-Debut"
Indy Ram. As part of the promotion of the Indy Ram
Truck, this exact truck accompanied the 1996 Hot Rod
Magazine Power Tour. The number #77 on the windshield,
rear window and key tag, identified the truck at the
Indy 500.
