Fun
Facts:
These cars stood at the forefront of design during the
late 60's/early 70's NASCAR Aero-Wars, acting as a
footprint for the later winged Daytona and Superbird
models. The 2nd Gen Dodge Chargers were introduced during
the 1968 model year with new "Jet-Age Aerodynamic Styling"
and sales increased 450% over the 1967 model year. While
this design was a big market hit, it created a whole new
set of aero-flaws for high speed NASCAR Racing...
Lowered in race form, the sunken grill with flat foldaway
headlights, created a steering problem/push at over 100MPH
and the "flying-buttress" style rear window body design,
created a tunnel effect causing rear-end lift. Chrysler
engineers performed wind-tunnel tests to correct these
aero-flaws which included eliminating the foldaway
headlamps, fitting a 1968 Coronet grille within the most
forward area of the front-end cavity, installing a-pillar
wind deflectors, welding a metal plug to the backlight
area (covering the recessed area), utilizing a flat-shaped
rear window and a host of other subtle changes...
In
order to meet NASCAR'S current homologation rules, it
mandated that factories had to "Sell What They Raced" and
at least 500 examples had to be sold in their showrooms,
to average consumers. Introduced as the "1969 Dodge
Charger 500 Fast-Top", dealers were notified on 07/18/68
that a limited number would be available for order with a
standard 440 or optional 426 Hemi. Unfinished 1969
Chargers were shipped to Creative Industries in Detroit
where they became 500's...
