This
Chevelles History by The 2nd Owner
"Every car today on
the street has its own history, but not necessarily
wrapped around the desire preserve love. The 1970 Chevelle,
to which I am proud to be the second owner, is a byproduct
of such love. The first owners Bill and Dorothy, lived
across the street from me and have for the last 31 years.
Bill is no longer with us as he died of a heart attack a
few years ago. But his wife. Dorothy, now 91 is as
spirited as ever. After Bill died, my wife and I started
to care for Dorothy, doing errands and small jobs around
the house that required a lot of patience with her as well
as being a handyman.
One
day, while cleaning out her garage and changing the oil in
her daily driver, I noticed what appeared to be a mound of
boxes, clothes, and just plain junk as we age. When I
asked about it, Dorothy shared that Bill had bought her
that new in 1970 for their 15 year wedding anniversary. I
asked, "what kind?". When she shared it was a Chevelle, my
heart skipped a beat. For a car guy, a 70 Chevelle is one
of the most desired muscle cars. As I was recovering, now
realizing that I have a true "barn find" diamond before
me, she shared that it had less than 22,000 original miles
on her with all original paperwork and manual, the back
seat had never been sat in, (they had no kids), and had
been parked in their garage for over 20 years. I asked her
if she would ever consider selling it and she replied, "no
there were too many good memories with that." I completely
understand and respected her for that, but then shared
that if she ever changed her mind, I would love to
purchase it and restore it to its former glory. After
cleaning off the dust, I realized it was essentially new,
no scratches, dents, and even the tires still held air!
Several months later, while cleaning Dorothy's yard, she
ask me if I would still like the Chevelle? I sensed it was
in gratitude for my wife and I caring for her. I
immediately said, "yes" and we closed the deal. Thus
beginning the saga of a complete rotisserie restoration of
Bill and Dorothy's love machine.
Being
retired in Southern California, the "Muscle Car Mecca" for
the world, I searched and combed the area for the best
rebuild shop. All referrals pointed to Barry White, a
cohort of Chip Foose and protege of Boyd Coddington (all
three with their own Discovery TV series (called,
Velocity). Barry White of Barry's Speed Shop took on the
project after noting that it was the cleanest, most rust
free 1970 car he had ever seen.
A year
and a half later, after a nut and bolt rotisserie
restoration upgrade and new everything. a 1970 Chevelle SS
re-creation Pro-Touring Classic from his shop and
milestones itself in pristine showroom condition today
with only 4,352 miles since rebuild. It hosts a Global
West suspension and a new dyno-tuned and performance
enhanced fuel injected LS-1 motor with 4L60E four speed
automatic delivering over 400+ HP to the rear wheels. It
includes all new and state of the art wiring, plumbing,
electronic instrumentation, 4 wheel disc brakes, wheels,
tires, chrome, new interior, power steering, retro radio
with modern AM/FM/CD/MP3, and Vintage ice cold air
conditioning. The color is rich show quality tone called
"Atomic Orange Metallic" with black racing stripes and a
black interior. This is real head turner for sure...
Incidentally, my first "hot date" with this car was upon
delivery with Dorothy. Her smile and tear stained eyes
said it all. Bill's love was preserved.
Sincerely, Ted L. - Second owner of this magnificent 1970
Chevelle."
